Valero, Falcons Shut Down St. Edward's

3/8/2014 3:31:00 PM

Desire Valero pitched her second shut out of the year and the UTPB offense stepped up in its final trip to the plate as the Falcons shut out St. Edward's 3-0 Saturday afternoon to close out a three-game Heartland Conference series in San Antonio.

The Falcons scored first for the second straight game, getting a single run in the top of the third when Niki DiSera singled into center with two outs to drive home Jennifer Quam.

Maintaining a 1-0 lead through six, UTPB added a pair of insurance runs in the top of the seventh. Holly Herrington and Aurora Burks each reached base on singles into the outfield. Both baserunners scored later in the inning with tou outs; Herrington when DiSera was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded, and Burks on a wild pitch to increase the Falcons lead to 3-0.

Valero kept the shutout intact an inning prior, getting out of a bases-loaded jam with a ground ball to third to keep the Hilltoppers off the scoreboard. She stranded eight runners in the seven inning complete game win, walking none and allowing seven hits with one strike out and a pair of hit batters.

UTPB returns to the field in two weeks, traveling to Laredo, Texas, for three games against Texas A&M International March 21-22.
