UTPB Softball came out on the short end twice Friday afternoon, falling in a pair of 5-2 and 2-1 losses on the road at St. Edward's in Austin.
The Falcons found themselves in a 5-0 hole when the Hilltoippers scored all of their runs off of five hits, two walks and an error in the bottom of the first.
UTPB got a pair back in the top of the fourth, scoring its first of the day when Jennifer Quam led off the frame with a single to left and stole second to reach scoring position with no outs. She came in two batters later on a bunt by
Nikki Brailsford, beating the throw home. Brailsford scored later in the inning when
Anna Hollingsworth singled into right field to trail 5-2.
Holly Herrington settled down after a shaky start, holding St. Edward's scoreless over the final six innings on just one hit after the first inning.
Desire Valero continued to limit the Hilltoppers' offense in game two, keeping them scoreless over the first five innings.
The Falcons scored first in the top of the second, taking the lead when pinch runner
Dee Gaona scored from second on a missed fly ball in left field to take a 1-0 lead.
St. Edward's tied the game in the top of the sixth, scoring on an infield single, and won the game on its fourth hit of the inning in the bottom of the seventh, an RBI single with the bases loaded and two outs.
The teams look to complete the three-game set Saturday afternoon, returning to the diamond at noon.
