Softball Splits Friday Doubleheader with Texas A&M International

3/21/2014 5:12:00 PM

UTPB softball and Texas A&M International took turns in dominating on offense Friday afternoon as the Falcons defeated the Dustdevils 6-1 in the opener and were held scoreless in game two in a 4-0 defeat at Dustdevil Field in Laredo.

The Falcons notched their first run of the day in the top of the second in the opener, taking a 1-0 lead as an Anna Hollingsworth single into center drove home Sydney Freeze from second.

UTPB broke the game open in the third. Jennie Quam and Niki DiSera led off the inning with base hits, Quam singling to third and scoring when DiSera doubled into left. Later in the frame Taylor Clancy doubled into right with two on to score DiSera and Nikki Brailsford with two outs. Another outfield hit, a single by Anna Hollingsworth, plated Clancy for the team's fourth run of the inning to go on top 5-0.

Aurora Burks capped off the UTPB offensive effort with her first home run of the season to left for a 6-0 lead.

The Dustdevils scored their lone run of game one on a fielder's choice with the bases loaded, but left three runners straned on base to end the inning.

Desiree Valero earned her third win of the season, striking out a season-high nine and giving up just one run in seven innings despite allowing nine hits and a pair of walks.

The control on offense shifted to TAMIU in game two when the Dustdevils scored in each of the fourth, fifth and sixth innings while keeping UTPB scoreless all game.

A bases-loaded walk in the bottom of the fourth led the first run of the game for TAMIU, and a two-run double in the bottom of the fifth with two outs increased the lead to 3-0.

A ground ball to second drove in a run from third to increase the advantage out to 4-0.

Hollingsworth and Quam led the team at the plate with three hits each on the day, while Hollingsworth and Clancy each had two RBI.

The teams return to action tomorrow at noon in the rubber game of the three-game set.
