UTPB softball concluded its stay at the 2014 Desert Stinger in Las Vegas, Nev., with a 10-7 loss against New Mexico Highlands Sunday afternoon.
The Falcons broke out to a 5-0 lead after the top of the first, scoring the first two runs of the day as
Nikki Brailsford and
Anna Hollingsworth put the ball in play to drive in one run each.
Taylor Clancy put them up five with her first home run of the season, a three-run jack to right center to give UTPB a 5-0 lead coming out of the first inning.
New Mexico Highlands cut the UTPB lead down to two in its half of the first, gettng its own three-run homer with one out in the inning.
Clancy added her fourth RBI of the day in the Falcons half of the third to go ahead 6-3, driving in
Taleas Marble on a two-out base hit into right.
UTPB scored another run in the top of the fourth when Jennifer Quam stole third and was drove in on an infield single by
Aurora Burks to go ahead by a 7-3 lead.
The Cowgirls came back with a run in the fourth on their second home run of the day and used two home runs in the fifth, the first in the inning a grand slam, to go on top by a score of 9-7.
Highlands added another run on an outfield single to take a 10-7 lead through six on the final run of the game.
Clancy led the Falcons with a 3-4 day at the plate with four RBI and one run scored, while Quam and Marble each had a pair of runs and base hits.
The Falcons are off the next week before coming home for their first home games of the season with a doubleheader Feb. 18 against University of the Southwest.
