UTPB Softball kicked off the 2014 season with a pair of games at the St. Mary's Division II Classic Saturday morning, opening with a pair of ranked teams in losses to #10 SE Oklahoma State and #14 Texas Woman's.
The Falcons struck first against 10th-ranked Southeastern, scoring the first run of the season on a pair of two outs hits as Niki DeSera reached scoring position on a double to center and
Miley McKee scored her on a single into left for a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the fourth.
SE Oklahaoma State evened the game at 1-1 in the top of the sixth, scoring a runner from second on an error with two outs.
Going into extra innings with the international tie break rule in effect, Southeastern broke the game open in the top half of the inning with four runs on four straight at-bats to go on top 5-1.
Needing to score four to tie, the Falcons were able to drive in their runner placed on second base with a sac fly by
Aurora Burks to score
Nikki Brailsford on the team's second out before ending the three run loss.
Burks and DeSera each led the Falcons with a pair of hits as UTPB collected seven hits to five for Southeastern.
Desiree Valero took the loss for UTPB giving up five total runs, just two earned, off of five hits and a walk with five strikeouts in the eight-inning complete game.
UTPB took the lead first once again in its second game of the day, getting a 1-0 lead on the #14 in the top of the first. Burks drove in her second run of the day with a two-out triple to plate
Taleas Marble  for a 1-0 advantage.
The Falcons lead was short lived as TWU tied the game in its half of the first on a two-out double to score a runner from first.
The score remained at 1-1 until the Pioneers added on five unearned runs in the bottom of the fourth, and TWU ended the game in the bottom of the fifth with three more unearned runs to cap off a 9-1 victory.
Holly Herrington was charged with the loss for UTPB, giving up one earned run early and eight unearned runs off of 11 hits with no walks and one strikeout.
The Falcons were held to just three hits in the game, one each from Brailsford, Burks, and McKee.
UTPB is back in action Sunday morning in San Antonio, closing out its weekend with games against Texas A&M Kingsville and Angelo State. First pitch against the Javelinas is scheduled for 10 a.m.
