Swimming Combines for 18 Event Wins in Final Dual of Season

UTPB men's and women's swimming each won nine events against Southwestern in the final warm up  before next months Pacific Collegiate Swimming Conference Championships.

"Today was one of the most complete meets we've had all season," UTPB swim coach Cameron Kainer said. "Both the men and women swam incredibly and I couldn't be more proud of their efforts. The score of the meet wasn't indicative of the type of meet we swam. We came in and took as many points as we could while earning some great times."

Sammi Strohmeyer won three different events for the Falcons on the women's side, taking first in the 200 Butterfly (2:15.18), 200 Backstroke (2:12.79) and the 100 Butterfly (1:01.23). Peyton Slater earned a pair of wins in the 100 Freestyle (56.08) and 500 Freestyle (5:21.85), and UTPB also got individual wins from Katie Russo in the 1,000 Freestyle (11:44.41), Lauren Porras in the 200 Freestyle (2:03.21) and Jillian Covey in the 100 Breaststroke. The 200 Freestyle Relay of Porras, Ariana Marek, Paige Slater and Peyton Slater took first in 1:43.53.

Alex Ruata paced the men's team with three first-place finishes, leading the pack in the 100 Breaststroke (58.50), 200 Breaststroke (2:11.41) and the 200 Individual Medley (1:57.86). Kyle Marshall took first twice, winning the 500 Freestyle (4:56.07) and 200 Freestyle (1:48.16). Individual event winners included Kyle Smith in the 100 Backstroke (56.09), Hunter Gnoza in the 200 Backstroke (2:02.53) and Mark Dix in the 100 Butterfly (52.93) while the 200 Medley relay team of Smith, Ruata, Dix and Marshall won in 1:37.16.

Both teams close out the 2013-14 season in two weeks at the Pacific Collegiate Swimming Conference Championships Feb. 12-15 in La Mirada, Calif.
