The University of Texas of the Permian Basin softball team went head to head with Midwestern State in the opening game of Tuesday's doubleheader, leading the Mustangs until the bottom of the seventh before they scored two to send the game into extra innings where they took advantage of the international tie break rule to defeat the Falcons 3-2 in eight innings. Midwestern State took game two of the doubleheader 8-0 in five innings.
UTPB went deep for the first two runs of the game, beginning with a long ball from
Chelsey Morgan to lead off the top of the second to take a 1-0 lead.
Nikki Brailsford put one over the fence in left with one out in the bottom of the fifth, increasing the team's advantage out to 2-0.
MSU came through with a pair of runs in its final opportunity, tying the game on a two-out homer by Chelsey Wall to send the game to extra innings.
UTPB was unable to take advantage of the runner placed on second to start the top of the eighth inning and the Mustangs ended the game with a sac fly to score the game-winning run.
Midwestern State controlled game two, hitting solo shots in each of the third and fourth innings to take a 3-0 lead after driving in a run on a sac fly in the bottom of the first. The Mustangs put up a five spot in the bottom of the fifth, ending the game on a walk-off grand slam.
UTPB is off for the next week with it's games scheduled for Wednesday afternoon at Cameron having been postponed due to expected overnight storms.
