Softball Drops Pair at #2 Lubbock Christian

4/24/2013 7:19:00 PM

The University of Texas of the Permian Basin entered the bottom of the sixth inning leading the second-ranked NAIA school in the nation 2-0, but a six run inning that included five unearned runs led to a 6-2 defeat Wednesday night in Lubbock, Texas. The Lady Chaps took game two of the series 19-6 behind a 13-run second inning.

UTPB broke a scoreless tie in the top of the fourth in the opener with a pair of runs as Jackie Guzman doubled down the line in left to score Amber Gutierrez from second. Guzman added the second run later in the inning as Tomie Ellard put the ball in play and both runners were safe on a fielder's choice as LCU was unable to record an out on the play.

Lubbock Christian responded in the bottom of the sixth to score once on a single to left, and had the inning extended on what would have been the third and final out on an error at second that allowed LCU to take the lead on an additional five unearned runs.

UTPB starting pitcher Desiree Valero gave up just one earned run in the six inning outing, allowing 10 hits while striking out one and walking none.

The Lubbock Christian offense put the game out of reach in the bottom of the second of game two, scoring 13 runs to go with three from the first inning to grab a commanding 16-0 lead.

UTPB was able to get three runs in each of the third and fifth innings, starting with a Kara Isbel home run in the top of the third that scored Kati Walker and Lesli Ericson.

The Falcons added three more in the top of the fifth, all coming with the bases loaded. Chelsey Morgan walked with one out and the bags packed full of Falcons to advance all of the runners and plate Taleas Marble. Amber Gutierrez followed with a single through the right side of the infield to drive in Walker and Nikki Brailsford recorded the second bases-loaded walk of the inning to score Isbel.

UTPB closes out the 2013 regular season this weekend, traveling to Wichita, Kan., for an important three game series against Newman. UTPB can clinch a spot in the 2013 Heartland Conference Championships with a pair of wins against the Jets.
