In a repeat of Friday afternoon's pitching battle,
Desiree Valero and Sarah Debrow fought through seven innings of scoreless softball before St. Edward's scored three runs in the top of the eighth to complete a sweep over UTPB with a 3-0 win.
Valero worked herself out of trouble after the first two batters in the top of the third reached on a walk and an infield single. She recovered to strike out the side and escape without any damage done and leave both baserunners stranded at second and third in scoring position.
The Falcons missed an opportunity to end the game in the bottom of the seventh when
Chelsey Morgan laced a hard single up the middle and
Kara Isbel walked to put two on with one out. Both base runners were left stranded as Debrow got a pair of strikeouts to get out of the jam.
The Hilltoppers started off the top of the eighth with a pair of base hits right in front of home plate. Cydney Ervin reached on a single to the third base side of the circle and Marissa Thome dropped a ball just in front of home that died in front of the plate. A ground out to third to get the runner at first moved the runners into scoring position, and Lauren Brode scored both runners on a hard ground ball off of
Chelsey Morgan's glove in the hole at short that rolled behind third base. Brode scored the game's third and final run on a single to right by Kendall Lucas.
Debrow struck out 10 in eight shut out innings, giving up four hits and allowing a pair of walks to earn the win.
Valero gave up eight hits while issuing one free pass in taking the loss, striking out three in the complete game.
UTPB hits the road to close out the regular season this week, stopping in Lubbock for a mid-week doubleheader Wednesday afternoon.
