Valero Fires One-Hitter in 3-0 Victory to Sweep OPSU

3/9/2013 6:41:00 PM

UTPB starting pitcher Desiree Valero struck out eight over seven shutout innings to pick up her second victory of the weekend and help the Falcons sweep in their first Heartland Conference series of the season in a 3-0 blanking of Oklahoma Panhandle State Saturday afternoon in Odessa, Texas.

She gave up a leadoff single in the top of the third to Kaitlin McCool but didn't allow another Aggie baserunner the rest of the game, recording 15 consecutive outs in picking up her third win of the season.

UTPB broke a scoreless tie in the bottom of the third when Anna Hollingsworth led off with a walk and pinch runner Lucero Porras moved to second on a sac bunt. A ground ball on the left side of the infield for the second out left her a base from home, and a Kati Walker single through the right side of the infield into right scored Porras for the game's first run.

The Falcons added two more in the bottom of the sixth after Walker started the inning with a single back up the middle and went to third on a single by Nikki Brailsford. Walker scored on a sac fly by Chelsey Morgan that saw Brailsford move over to third, and she scored on the next play as Taleas Marble reached on an infield error.

Walker led UTPB with two hits on the day, scoring a run and driving one in to complete the series sweep.

The Falcons hit the road this coming Tuesday, traveling to San Antonio for a doubleheader at Incarnate Word. First pitch is slated for 1 p.m.
