3/16/2013 2:57:00 PM

The University of Texas of the Perman Basin softball team grabbed an early lead and scored the game's last run to hold off Texas A&M International for a 3-2 victory in Odessa, Texas.

UTPB took a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the second as Amber Gutierrez homered to left center, scoring Jackie Guzman with two outs.

The Dustdevils used home runs in the fourth and fifth to come back and tie the game, getting a homer with the bases empty and two outs from Kristen LaBuhn in the top of the fourth followed by a solo shot an inning later by Chelsea Capello to center that knotted the game at 2-2.

Chelsey Morgan got UTPB back in the lead in the bottom of the fifth, singling to shallow left to allow Kati Walker to score from second on a play at the plate with two outs in the inning.

Texas A&M International stranded the winning run on base in both the sixth and seventh innings. UTPB starter Desiree Valero got a foul out next to first to get out of a jam in the sixth, and Janessa Martinez picked up her first save in the seventh, entering with one out and getting the final two batters of the game out on a strike out and ground ball out at second.

UTPB is back at home this week in midweek action, hosting Abilene Christian in a Tuesday afternoon doubleheader. First pitch is slated for 2 p.m.
