TAMIU box score
St. Mary's box score
AUSTIN – For just the second time in school history the UTPB softball team won a game in the Heartland Conference Tournament, taking a 2-0 victory over Texas A&M International. The celebration was short lived as top-seeded St. Mary's ended the Falcons' season with a 7-2 win in the semifinal game.
Texas A&M International committed three errors in the game, two of which proved to be costly as the Falcons scored two unearned runs in the bottom of the sixth which proved to be the difference in the game.
Both teams struggled offensively with four hits each as
Desiree Valero picked up her 13
th win of the season after shutting out the Dustdevils while picking up a strikeout.
Two of UTPB's hits came in the sixth as
Lucero Porras reached on a one out single before
Cene Padilla singled to center. Thanks to a Dustdevil error, Porras was able to move to third and Padilla to second. The Falcons capitalized on another TAMIU miscue on the very next play as
Katelyn Stanley reached on an infield error which allowed both Porras and Padilla to score.
Valero retired the first two batters in the seventh inning before an error gave the Dustdevils a baserunner. A groundout by Kristen LaBuhn ended the threat and the game, allowing the Falcons to advance to the semifinal game against St. Mary's.
The game was a rematch of the tournament opener where the Rattlers took a 3-0 victory. UTPB had little time to celebrate as the game started less than an hour after its victory over the Dustdevils.
St. Mary's scored early and often, picking up at least one run in all but the second inning. The No. 1 seeded Rattlers pounded out 13 hits including two doubles and two home runs. Nicole Sardelich was the biggest Falcon killer as she hit both home runs for two of her three hits, drove in two runs and scored three times.
The Rattlers struck first in the bottom of the opening inning with a run, but the Falcons were able to tie the game in the third when
Kati Walker, who led off the inning with a double down the left field line, eventually scored from third on a double steal.
The Falcons wouldn't score again until the top of the seventh when
Chelsey Morgan singled through the right side to score
Tomie Ellard.
UTPB finished the season with a 17-32 record, one win off the school record for wins in a season.
