FALCONS SPLIT WITH EASTERN NEW MEXICO

3/7/2012 8:03:00 PM

game one
game two

Desiree Valero stymied the Eastern New Mexico bats in the first game as she allowed just four hits and an unearned run as UTPB took a 2-1 win in the first game of the double header.  The Zias turned the tables in the second game by holding off the Falcons in the bottom of the seventh to win the night cap 3-2.

In the first home games of the season, Valero struck out five in the opener and held Eastern New Mexico hitless for 2.2 innings before catcher Morgan Miller singled up the middle.  The sophomore nearly completed the shutout, but a Falcon error allowed the Zias to score their only run in the top of the seventh inning.

The Falcons got on the board early as Whitney Kuhrt led off the game with a single through the left side before stealing second base two pitches later.  She would later move to third on a ground out by Courtney Cernoch.  An illegal pitch by Amy Smith allowed Kurht to score from third giving UTPB an early 1-0 lead.

UTPB added to its lead in the fourth inning thanks to a single by Tieifa Dueberry and two Zia errors.  Dueberry led off the inning with a single to left, but Sarah Spencer misplayed the ball in left field allowing Dueberry to advance to second.  Cene Padilla bunted over Amanda Cejudo, who pinch ran for Dueberry, putting her on third base.  An RBI ground out by Lesli Ericson plated Cejudo, giving the Falcons a 2-0 lead.

The score would stay that way until Amanda Lale led off the top of the seventh with a double to left field and would later come around to score on a Falcon throwing error.  UTPB was able to close out the game after Dueberry threw out Melissa Reynosa at second base for the third out of the inning.

Dueberry picked up two of the Falcons' five hits on the day while Ericson picked up the lone RBI.  Valero improved to 6-9 on the year, giving UTPB its fourth-straight win.

Despite committing four errors in the second game, Eastern New Mexico was able to hold on for the one-run victory.  UTPB threatened in the bottom of the seventh when Kuhrt reached on a two-out error and would later steal second base.   She would get no further as Zia pitcher Katie Ramsay threw a ground out to end the threat and picked up the win.

The Zias opened the game with two runs in the first thanks to an error, three walks and a wild pitch.

UTPB cut the lead in half in the bottom of the third when Tomie Ellard led off the inning with a double that just cleared the infield.  She would later come around to score after Anna Hollingsworth plated her with an RBI single.

Three Zia errors led to another Falcon run in the fourth when Padilla was able to score from second on a bad throw.

Cassie Beene broke the tie with a double to right center to score Josette Aguirre, who singled down the right field line.

Both teams tallied five hits with the Falcons picking up a double and four singles.

UTPB will remain at home tomorrow when it hosts the University of the Southwest in a double header starting at 2 p.m.
