Katelyn Stanley was a one-person wrecking crew for The University of Texas of the Permian Basin softball team as she drove in three of the Falcons' seven runs, including the game-winning two-run homer in the second game. Stanley helped the Falcons sweep the University of the Southwest, taking the first game 3-0 before winning the second 4-3.
Stanley went 1-for-3 in the first game, including an RBI single up the middle that was part of a two-run fifth inning before hitting her two-run blast in the fifth to erase a Mustang 3-2 lead. She not only went 2-for-2 in the nightcap, she also came in relief to toss three innings where she gave up just one hit while striking out four for her first win of the season.
Sophomore
Tomie Ellard kept the Mustang bats at bay in the first game as she pitched four innings allowing just two hits while striking out a season-high five. She didn't allow a hit until Leslie Dominguez singled to left to lead off the fourth inning before picking up the second win of the season.
UTPB broke a scoreless tie in the fourth when
Cene Padilla hit an RBI single up the middle to score
Anna Hollingsworth, who reached on an error to lead off the inning. The University of the Southwest committed three errors in the game which led to which led to its demise as all three of the Falcons' runs were unearned.
The Falcons extended their lead in the fifth with two more runs thanks to two hits and two errors by the Mustangs. Lesli Ericson and Ellard reached on back-to-back fielding miscues to start the frame before
Courtney Cernoch hit a one-out RBI single to right to plate Ericson. Stanley's single to center to score Ellard for UTPB's third run of the game.
Desiree Valero picked up her first save of the season after allowing just one hit over three innings while striking out five.
In the second game, the Falcons won a see-saw battle as the lead changed three times before Stanley hit her first homer in a UTPB uniform. The Mustangs scored two runs off two hits and took advantage of two errors in the top of the first. The Falcons answered in the second thanks to an RBI single by
Kati Walker and a triple by Whitney Kurht which scored Walker to tie the game at two.
Five errors by UTPB led to two unearned runs, including one in the third which broke a 2-2 tie. The score would remain that way until Stanley's heroics.
The Falcons improved to 12-20 on the year and will get back to Heartland Conference play this weekend when they head to Goodwell, Okla. to face Panhandle State.
