SOFTBALL TEAM PULLS OUT EXTRA-INNING AFFAIR

2/28/2012 9:51:00 PM

HOBBS, N.M. – Courtney Cernoch squeezed in Whitney Khurt to lift The University of Texas of the Permian Basin to a 2-1 eight-inning win over the University of the Southwest.

The game, which was hampered by 30 mile per hour winds, saw few hits, but Tomie Ellard picked up a single when it counted.  The Falcons, who were trailing 1-0 in the top of the seventh, hit a two-out RBI single to plate Tieifa Dueberry to tie the game.

Dueberry led off the inning with a walk and moved to second when Lucero Porras hit a sacrifice bunt to move her to second.  A groundout by Cene Padilla put Dueberry on third before Ellard's game-tying single.

Desiree Valero, who came in relief to pitch 3.2 innings, struck out four and retired the Mustangs in order in the bottom of the eight to pick up the victory.

The Falcons will remain on the road as they face Eastern New Mexico tomorrow in Portales, N.M.
