DURANT, Okla. – The University of Texas of the Permian softball team opened the Southeastern Oklahoma Tournament with a 5-1 victory over Washburn, but fell 9-3 to Cameron and 12-2 to Missouri Western.
Desiree Valero was impressive in the opener as she gave up just three hits while striking out five and giving up one unearned run. She had plenty of offensive support as the Falcons pounded out a season-high 13 hits, including a 3-for-4 performance with an RBI by
Tieifa Dueberry.
Anna Hollingsworth and
Chelsey Morgan also picked up two hits in the win.
UTPB scored first in the second inning when
Cene Padilla hit an RBI single to drive in Leslie Ericksen, who reached on a fielder's choice. Dueberry would add to the lead in the third when she doubled in Hollingsworth who reached on a one-out single.
The Falcons would score single runs in the fourth, fifth and sixth innings for their second win of the season.
In the Cameron game, the Aggies busted out for six runs in the sixth inning which erased a 3-2 Falcon lead and would put up one more in the seventh to defeat UTPB for the second time this season.
Hollingsworth gave the Falcons a 1-0 lead with a sacrifice fly to center to plate Whitney Khurt, who led off the inning with a single. Cameron tied it up in the second before UTPB took a 3-1 advantage in the third when
Katelyn Stanley hit a two-run double to drive in Khurt and Dueberry.
The Aggies cut into the Falcon lead with a run in the fourth before sending nine batters to the plate in the sixth.
In the third game of the day, Missouri Western pounded out 12 hits, four for extra bases and scored five unearned runs in the win.
Courtney Cernoch picked up two of the Falcons' five hits on the evening, while Hollingsworth remained hot with a double.
Missouri Western set the tone early with eight runs in the first two innings and three more in the third before UTPB scored two in the bottom of the third.
Weather permitting, the Falcons will take on Southern Arkansas at noon tomorrow.
