Gustavo Damis Resende of men's swimming is the 2017-18 UTPB Male Scholar Athlete of the Year. He is junior engineering major with a 4.0 GPA from Uberlandia, Brazil. He's a six-time president's honor roll member, two-time New South Intercollegiate Swim Conference scholar-athlete, and a member of the UTPB 3.0 club. He holds UTPB school records in the 100 Backstroke and as part of the 200 & 400 Medley Relay teams and has six times on the top-10 all-time UTPB charts. He was voted a captain for the upcoming 2018-19 season, spends time helping to tutor other members of the swim team, and has participated in community service events with the team, including Habitat for Humanity and House of the Sycamore Tree.
"Gustavo has demonstrated the strong character and work ethic to balance both athletics and academics," said UTPB Swimming and Diving Coach Kainer. "Not only is he a successful athlete but he's a strong student that works hard to excel in the classroom. His leadership for our team has been greattly appreciated and we are excited to have him continue his career here at UTPB."
